According to statistics from the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Taiwan’s hidden liabilities for labor insurance reached NT$13.5 trillion by the end of June, surging by NT$1.7 trillion within a year. This pushed the total hidden liabilities of the government to NT$20.5 trillion, setting a new record high.
Experts noted that the aging population keeps pension spending rising. Coupled with inflationary pressures that will further inflate benefit payments, the overall growth rate of labor insurance expenditures will far exceed revenue growth in the future. This will cause hidden liabilities to surge dramatically, intensifying financial pressures. The government may need to adjust contribution rates or benefit levels in the future to address this; otherwise, the burden on future generations will continue to worsen.
