Taiwan’s “Shovel Heroes” Touch the World, Military Enters Disaster Zone to Aid Recovery before the Moon Festival
The overflow of Matai’an Creek Barrier Lake in Hualien caused a serious disaster. Tens of thousands of volunteers carried shovels and took trains into the disaster area, creating the scene of “Shovel Heroes.” The footage appeared on Korea’s three major TV stations and sparked heated discussion.
Currently, The Water Resources Agency has completed river diversion, and the military is fully engaged in rescue efforts with the goal of helping residents return to normal life before the Moon Festival. The Ministry of Health and Welfare also announced that special fundraising has exceeded 4 billion NT dollars, and the county government plans to give each affected household 50,000 NT dollars starting from October 3.
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Pushes “50-50” Chip Plan, Challenges Silicon Shield
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Lutnick said on September 27 that the United States cannot rely too much on Taiwan’s semiconductors, and he proposed a “50-50” chip production plan between the U.S. and Taiwan. He stressed that only when America has enough local production can it truly protect Taiwan.
Lutnick revealed that trade talks between Taiwan and the U.S. will start soon, and TSMC is expected to become the focus. He also brought up the “Silicon Shield” and argued that it is not safe for Taiwan to hold 95% of the capacity. He said the U.S. must raise its self-production rate to 40% to reduce single dependence and secure action ability.
Gold Price Breaks 3,800 Dollars per Ounce, Sets New Record
On September 29, the international spot gold price broke 3,800 dollars per ounce for the first time, reaching as high as 3,819.81 dollars. It rose for six weeks in a row and set a new record. Investors worried about a possible U.S. government shutdown and the delay of job data. The weaker dollar further pushed up demand for gold. Tight supply and ETF inflows also drove the surge.
Silver, platinum, and palladium all rise across the board the same day. Experts said that with strong central bank buying and possible Fed rate cuts, gold still has room to rise. Asian markets are also competing in gold storage and trading.
U.S. Retail Industry Layoffs Surge, Starbucks Closures Draw Attention Again
Starbucks announced it will close about 500 stores and cut about 900 non-retail employees as part of its transformation plan. This is the second round of layoffs by Starbucks this year.
The latest financial report showed that its same-store sales have fallen for six straight quarters.
Experts pointed out that the U.S. retail industry is facing a serious wave of layoffs, with more than 80,000 people cut in the first seven months of this year. The main reasons include inflation, rising tariffs, AI replacement, economic uncertainty, and government budget cuts. From cosmetics to sports brands, many companies are reducing staff, showing the challenges of the industry.
Browser Choice Shows Work Attitude? Firefox and Chrome Users Perform Better
Economist Michael Hausman studied data from thirty thousand customer service workers. He found that employees who used Firefox or Chrome stayed in their jobs 15% longer, took 19% fewer days off, and performed better in sales, call time, and customer satisfaction.
The reason was not computer skills, but their willingness to break away from default settings and improve their environment. The study showed that people who chose different browsers were also more likely to look for new ways and solve problems at work, and therefore performed better.
Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.

The U.S. push for balanced chip production highlights rising concerns over Taiwan’s dominance and America’s need for self-sufficiency.

The latest round of Starbucks layoffs shows how America’s retail industry is shrinking fast, with rising costs and automation forcing many companies to cut staff.
The findings reveal that employees who make proactive choices, such as using a different browser, are more likely to seek solutions at work and deliver higher results.
