Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said in a parliamentary session that if China invades Taiwan, it could become a “situation of crisis of survival,” allowing Japan to use its right of “collective self-defense.” Her comment marks a clear shift from Japan’s usual strategic ambiguity.
Beijing reacted strongly, summoning Japan’s ambassador to China, issuing a rare travel advisory, and making threatening comments. To calm tensions, Masaki Kanai from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs traveled to Beijing and repeated that Japan’s position had not changed, calling for peaceful dialogue. Public opinion in Japan is split, but the Takaichi Cabinet still holds a 69% approval rating.

Labor Insurance Crisis! 2031 Bankruptcy Pushes Lawmakers to Speed Up Review
Because the Labor Insurance old-age pension increases the longer people live, its financial burden has continued to grow. The Labor Insurance Fund is now expected to run out of money by 2031.
More than 1.87 million retired workers currently receive old-age pensions, averaging NT$19,344 a month. As insured wages, service years, and price levels increase, 46.31% now receive over NT$20,000, a share expected to exceed half by year-end. To stabilize the system, the Legislative Yuan scheduled a November 17 review of an amendment that would place the government’s ultimate payment responsibility into law.

Driven by strong AI demand, Taiwan’s major IT manufacturers saw revenue grow for the 20th straight month in October, with monthly earnings surpassing NT$1 trillion and reaching a new record high.
Taiwan’s IT manufacturers supply large amounts of products and semiconductors to major clients such as Apple, Microsoft, and NVIDIA, with strong demand for AI servers and advanced chips driving growth. The 19 companies listed in the “Asia300” index, including TSMC and Foxconn, reported combined October revenue of NT$1.9538 trillion, up 11.8% from a year earlier. Companies with a smaller share of AI-related products, however, showed more mixed performance.
