Sanxia Major Traffic Accident: 3 Students Dead, 16 Injured
On May 19, a serious traffic accident happened near Beida Elementary School in Sanxia District, New Taipei City. A 78-year-old driver lost control and suddenly sped up at the intersection of Guocheng Road and Guoguang Road, injuring 16 people. The accident happened during school dismissal time, and most of the injured were students. Among them, three students went into cardiac arrest at the scene and, despite rescue efforts, were pronounced dead.
Currently, Taiwan requires drivers aged 75 and above to undergo a medical examination and cognitive test every three years to renew their licenses. However, this case highlights that the current system still struggles to filter out all potential risks. Experts suggest adding simulated driving tests, road tests, and traffic knowledge reviews to better assess driving abilities.
