US Health Secretary Calls WHO "Dying," Urges Countries to Leave

The United States used to be the largest donor to the World Health Organization (WHO), but since President Trump stopped funding, the WHO has faced serious budget problems. On May 20, during the WHO meeting, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gave a pre-recorded speech, criticizing the WHO as bureaucratic, bloated, and “dying,” and called on countries to leave it.

He said the U.S. withdrawal should be a warning and suggested creating a new, transparent, and responsible organization to replace the WHO. The WHO is now working on reforms to fix its budget issues, but Kennedy’s comments have brought more controversy and challenges to the meeting.

Lai Ching-te's First Anniversary in Office Speech Focuses on Three Key Challenges and Cross-Party Dialogue

On May 20, President Lai Ching-te gave a speech marking his first year in office. The speech focused on three key challenges: climate change, health promotion, and social resilience. He said the government has made progress, including investing over 1 trillion NT dollars to reach the 2030 net-zero goal, adding 71.2 billion NT dollars to healthcare, creating Taiwan multi-support Cancer Drugs Fund, and starting a carbon fee system.

Lai also said he would have the national security team brief opposition leaders to encourage cross-party talks. He hopes these actions will help Taiwan grow sustainably and bring everyone together to build a better future.

Variant Shift Causes 88% Increase in Weekly COVID-19 Visits

According to the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control report on May 20, the number of COVID-19 emergency and outpatient visits from May 11 to 17 increased by 88.2% compared to the previous week. Spokesperson Luo Yi-chun indicated that this surge is related to the NB.1.8.1 variant, which has strong immune evasion and high transmissibility. The CDC stated that the epidemic is expected to peak in mid-to-late June and urged the public to continue cooperating with preventive measures to protect public health.

New Trends Among Generation Z in the Workplace: The Attention on the "Pretending to Be Busy" Phenomenon

Many Generation Z workers entered the online workplace during the pandemic, resulting in these young workers feeling uncomfortable with traditional office culture, and about 33% admit to pretending to be busy.

Experts point out that this phenomenon reflects the fact that when workers do not see the value in their work, they may fill their time with fake busyness. To improve this situation, companies should enhance communication with employees, redefine the necessity of being physically present, and help workers understand the value of their jobs.

Japan's McDonald's "Chii Kawa Incident" Causes Food Waste

Japan’s McDonald’s recently launched Happy Meal toys in collaboration with the popular anime “Chii Kawa,” leading to a buying frenzy among customers. This surge in demand has resulted in a significant amount of meals being discarded, causing serious food waste. Resellers have even sold the toys at high prices, worsening the situation.

McDonald’s has announced that due to sales far exceeding  expectations, they may halt the third wave of promotions. They have also set a limit of four Happy Meals per person and urged the public not to purchase large quantities for resale, in order to reduce improper buying behaviors.

Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.
