Taiwan Railways Starts Train Protection Plan After Violence Incidents

On May 22, two train conductors were attacked by passengers and sent to the hospital. On May 23, Taiwan Railways General Manager Feng Hui-sheng held a press conference to condemn the violence and announced the start of a “Train Protection Plan.” The plan works with railway and local police to increase patrols and visibility. Passengers who may cause safety problems will be removed from trains.

Taiwan Railways said they will help injured staff file lawsuits and pay all costs. They are also discussing giving frontline workers self-defense tools and body cameras to improve safety.

The U.S. Plans Semiconductor Tariffs, Taiwan and Others Request Exemptions

The U.S. is preparing to impose tariffs on semiconductor products, drawing significant attention from Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. The Taiwanese government has submitted a request for exemption, stating that the tariffs could harm the competitiveness of America’s high-tech industries and reduce Taiwan’s willingness to invest in the U.S. TSMC also warned that the tariffs might disrupt its investment plan, delay plant construction in the U.S., and weaken its ability to supply U.S. companies like Apple.

South Korea and Japan emphasized that the tariffs could harm their cooperation with the U.S. The three countries are urging the U.S. to reconsider the policy to protect global supply chain stability.

Trump Bans Harvard from Taking International Students, Current Students Must Transfer

On May 22, the Trump administration announced that Harvard University is no longer allowed to admit international students. They accused Harvard of supporting violence, being anti-Semitic, and working with the Chinese Communist Party. The Department of Homeland Security ordered nearly 6,800 foreign students to transfer to other schools or lose their legal status.

Harvard strongly opposed the decision, calling it illegal and harmful. They promised to help affected students and emphasized the importance of international students to academic development.
