With the Dragon Boat Festival coming up, the debate between Southern and Northern zongzi is heating up again. According to Social Lab’s statistics, Southern zongzi took first place. Its cooking method, boiling with raw rice and filling, is loved by people who enjoy a moist texture.
Millet zongzi ranked second because last year’s food safety issue, where toxic pesticide millet seeds were used, brought it a lot of attention. Northern zongzi, known for its firm and distinct texture, dropped to third place as it wasn’t as popular in discussions this year. Which type of zongzi is your favorite?

古人視農曆五月為「惡月」，稱端午節為「惡月惡日」。由於此時正值夏季，瘟疫流行、蚊蟲滋生，因此端午節的習俗多與祈福、避邪有關，例如掛艾草、戴香包等，都是為了驅除病氣。
至於「不能說端午節快樂」的說法，則是由於古人認為這一天除了有紀念屈原的意義外，也有對瘟疫與災厄表達敬畏的含意，因此祝賀「快樂」並不合適，顯示端午節除了紀念屈原，背後還有許多文化意涵。
Dragon Boat Festival Customs and Taboos: Why Can't We Say "Happy Dragon Boat Festival"?
In ancient times, the fifth month of the lunar calendar was seen as an “unlucky month,” and the Dragon Boat Festival was called an “unlucky day.” This is because it was summer, a time when diseases spread and insects were common. Many Dragon Boat Festival traditions, like hanging mugwort and wearing fragrance sachets, were meant to drive away sickness.
The idea of not saying “Happy Dragon Boat Festival” comes from the belief that this day is not just about remembering Qu Yuan but also about showing respect for diseases and disasters. Saying “happy” is seen as inappropriate. This shows that the Dragon Boat Festival has many cultural meanings beyond honoring Qu Yuan.
第三則：臺北國際龍舟錦標賽熱血登場 新增常青女子組
全國年度盛事「2025臺北國際龍舟錦標賽」將於5月30日至6月1日登場，匯集221支國內外頂尖隊伍參賽。臺北市政府體育局於5月19日在大佳河濱公園舉行祭江儀式，為賽事祈福並啟動開訓。
今年也新增常青女子組，期待更多熱愛運動的女性加入，一同展現「壯志同心、破浪前行」的精神，也期待藉由此次賽事，鼓勵更多市民親近臺北水岸、體驗水上運動樂趣。
Taipei International Dragon Boat Championship Begins with New Senior Women's Division
The annual event, “2025 Taipei International Dragon Boat Championship,” will be held from May 30 to June 1, with 221 top teams from Taiwan and abroad competing. On May 19, the Taipei City Government’s Department of Sports held a river blessing ceremony at Dajia Riverside Park to pray for the event and start training.
This year, a new Senior Women’s Division has been added to encourage more women who love sports to join and show the spirit of “United Ambition, Riding the Waves.” The event also hopes to inspire more people to enjoy Taipei’s riverside and experience the fun of water sports.
