Recently, a high school student Yang shared his learning portfolio that helped him get admitted to several prestigious universities on Threads. However, people found out that he claimed in his application to have won “Best Debater,” when he had only won “Outstanding Debater for a Single Round.” This led to accusations of lying. A few days later, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taipei Medical University, and Chung Shan Medical University canceled his admission to their medical programs. Chang Gung University and China Medical University are also reviewing the case but will not share the results publicly.
Taiwanese Teacher Loses Taiwan Citizenship After Getting Chinese Residency Certificate
On June 5, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) announced that Taiwanese teacher Chang, Li-Chi lost his Taiwan citizenship because he got a Chinese “Resident Certificate” last year. According to the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area, having “household registration” in China means losing Taiwanese citizenship. This has caused debates about whether he now has no citizenship in both places.
Although one has to give up his Taiwan ID to get the residency certificate, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said the certificate is only a “temporary and transitional document.” This has led to discussions about identity issues between Taiwan and China.

Fines for Vendors Handling Money Before Touching Food: New Rule Temporarily in Guidance Period
On June 4, the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Food and Drug Administration announced changes to the Regulations on Good Hygiene Practice for Food. The new rule says street vendors and restaurant workers can’t touch food right after handling money. If they break this rule, they can be fined from 60,000 NTD up to 200 million NTD.
However, because legislators said it’s hard to follow in practice, the Ministry changed the policy on June 5 to include a guidance period that lasts “until vendors can fully comply.” This change has led to many discussions about how the rule will work.
