2025 IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook: Taiwan Ranks 6th Globally
On June 17, the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland released the “2025 World Competitiveness Ranking.” Taiwan moved up two spots to rank 6th among 69 countries and kept its position as the top economy with a population over 20 million for the fifth year in a row.
Thanks to industries like semiconductors, AI, and high-performance computing, exports grew, boosting the economy and improving Taiwan’s economic performance by 16 places. This was the main reason for the overall ranking increase. The National Development Council said the government will use this ranking as a guide to keep improving economic strength and deal with global challenges.
Wave of Resignations Among Critical Care Doctors: Systems Should Focus on Patients
Recently, many critical care doctors in Taiwan have been resigning, and young doctors are unwilling to choose critical care as their specialty. Wu Ming-Shiang, the superintendent of National Taiwan University Hospital, said that the medical system should focus on patients instead of specialties.
For example, both neurology and cardiovascular departments can perform thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke, but because of the division of specialties, neurologists are often overworked. Wu pointed out that while specialization improves quality, it causes problems when there are not enough doctors. He called for reforms to create a system that supports the medical staff.
Top 10 Causes of Death in 2024: Cancer Ranks First for 43 Years
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on June 16 the top 10 causes of death for 2024. Cancer remained the leading cause of death for 43 years in a row, with lung cancer, liver cancer, and colorectal cancer being the top three types.
Overall, a total of 201,383 people died, which is 2.3% less than in 2023, showing that death rates are returning to normal after the pandemic. It is worth noting that suicide returned to 10th place, with over 4,000 deaths, showing the importance of mental health that cannot be ignored.
The Age of AI: Academic Degrees Are No Longer the Key to Jobs
The “2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer” report shows that AI is quickly changing what companies look for in workers. Academic degrees are becoming less important, while practical skills and AI knowledge are now the focus. Jobs like financial analysts, which heavily use AI, have seen skill requirements change by 66%.
Experts recommend learning AI skills, such as using large language models and writing effective prompts, to stay competitive. Meanwhile, the value of a university education lies in developing critical thinking, logical reasoning, and interpersonal skills.
Airplane Seat Safety: Choosing the Right Seat Can Increase Survival Rate by 20%
A recent plane crash in India, which killed at least 294 people, has sparked new discussions about airplane seat safety. Experts say that if the crash impact is at the front of the plane, seats at the back have the highest survival rate, 20% higher than those at the front.
Seats near the wings or wing roots are also safer because of stronger structures and their closeness to emergency exits, but the risks from fuel tanks should be noted. Experts also remind passengers to check the location of emergency exits and follow safety instructions to ensure a safer flight.
