Taiwan Railways Raises Ticket Prices; Refunds Available for Delays
Starting June 23, Taiwan Railways implemented a comprehensive ticket price increase, with an average rise of 26.8%. Baggage and parcel shipping fees will also be adjusted, and the free mileage for using electronic tickets on the Tze-Chiang Express will be reduced to 50 kilometers. If a train is delayed by more than 10 minutes, passengers can choose not to board at the departure station and apply for a refund without any handling fees.
Regarding the issue of fare evasion, legislators suggested establishing a “permanent carry blacklist.” However, Taiwan Railways believes that this action may infringe on privacy rights, violate principles of equal treatment and proportionality, and pose difficulties in implementation. As a result, the measure will not be adopted for now.
China Faces Significant Losses Amid Escalating Israel-Iran Conflict
The recent escalation of conflict between Israel and Iran may pose serious risks for China, according to The New York Times. China relies heavily on Iranian oil supplies, and the ongoing war is expected to cause energy prices fluctuations.
Additionally, last year, U.S. President Donald Trump stated once that if China were to use military force against Taiwan, the U.S. would attack Beijing. With the U.S. now actively engaging in military actions against Iran, speculation suggests that Trump’s warnings could indeed come true, potentially altering China’s geopolitical standing dramatically.
Apple Launches All-Glass iPhone for 20th Anniversary
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, Apple plans to launch a new all-glass model called “Glasswing” in 2027. This phone will use full-screen design with the removal of the notch. Additionally, it will feature a Liquid Glass interface, offering smoother visuals and more intuitive user interactions.
The new model will also run on the powerful iOS 28 system, boosting the supply chain shipments for companies like Foxconn and TSMC. However, while the industry is excited about this new product, experts predict that the complex manufacturing process will lead to a record-high price.
Mini Job Trend Rises And Redefines the Workplace
With the rise of the “mini job” trend, short-hour and highly flexible jobs, such as dog walking and practicing foreign language speaking, have attracted both middle-aged and young workers. Middle-aged individuals prefer task-based jobs due to physical limitations, while young people enjoy project-based work to avoid the traditional 9-to-5 lifestyle.
The emergence of matching platforms like “ChickPT” and PRO360 has facilitated rapid market expansion. In the future, the workplace will focus on tasks, and labor relationships will no longer be tied to long-term contracts.
Taiwan's New Pedestrian Safety Regulations Take Effect with Increased Penalties
Starting June 30, Taiwan will raise fines for failing to yield to pedestrians. The fine for minor injuries will be adjusted to between NT$18,000 and NT$30,000, while the maximum fine for serious injuries or fatalities will be NT$36,000. Additionally, the suspension period for driving licenses will be extended.
Although pedestrian accidents slightly decreased in 2024, 83 pedestrians still lost their lives due to vehicle violations, indicating significant room for improvement. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications hopes to further reduce the accident rate and eliminate the stigma of being a “pedestrian hell.”
