The Political Storm of the Mass Recall Is About to Intensify, Raising Concerns
The mass recall vote will be held on July 26. President Lai Ching-te called for collaboration with civic groups during the Democratic Progressive Party’s national congress. You Ying-long, chairman of the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation, predicts that the next 28 days will become increasingly difficult for the DPP and the recall movement, as the 24 legislators being targeted hold the home advantage and are expected to fight back fiercely.
He emphasized that this mass recall will be a significant moment in the Blue-Green confrontation, with outcomes still highly uncertain.
Trump Will Not Extend Tariff Pause; Punitive Tariffs About to Be Implemented
On June 29, U.S. President Trump announced that he would not extend the 90-day pause on global tariffs set to end on July 9, unless formal agreements are reached with other countries. Trump emphasized that the U.S. government will quickly notify countries of the new punitive tariff rates and will no longer negotiate individually.
This policy puts pressure on U.S. domestic industries, particularly the canned goods manufacturing sector, which is expected to face rising costs. Companies may be forced to raise prices by more than 20%, further passing the pressure onto consumers.
Public Opinion in the U.S. Supports Military Aid to Taiwan; Chip Industry Boosts Support Rate
According to the latest poll released by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute on June 29, if China invades Taiwan, 70% of American respondents support sending troops to help defend Taiwan, with support rising to 78% after learning that Taiwan is a semiconductor hub. The survey also shows that the American public is deeply concerned about China’s technology theft and human rights issues.
In addition, on the issue of using tariffs as a diplomatic tool, although there is a clear divide between the Democratic and Republican parties, most Americans still favor a free market, and impose tariffs only when necessary, on a temporary and limited basis.
Insurance Industry Loses Over 100 Billion in May; Three Major Financial Sectors May Face Recession
According to recent reports, Taiwan’s insurance industry incurred a loss of NT$106.6 billion in May, the largest on record. The loss dragged down the overall performance of the three major financial industries (banking, securities, and insurance), cutting total profits for the first five months in half to NT$232.8 billion, raising concerns that the full-year results may face a downturn. The Financial Supervisory Commission has eased reserve requirements to mitigate the impact of market risks on profits.
However, the market is still worried about exchange rate changes and rising hedging costs, which could further reduce profits in the financial industry and challenge future dividend payments.

According to staff, the owner, now advanced in age and approaching retirement, decided to quietly close the restaurant. With Fei Qian Wu’s closure, only Kenmochiya and Hamamatsuya remain in operation among the original “Four Famous Eel Restaurants” in Taipei.
