On August 19, US Commerce Secretary Lutnick confirmed that the government is negotiating to buy about 10% of Intel’s shares, using funds from the CHIPS and Science Act. He emphasized that the US must bring chip manufacturing back to the US and cannot rely on Taiwan.
At the same time, Japan’s SoftBank announced a $2 billion investment in Intel to support its US expansion. Experts say if subsidies are converted into equity, companies like TSMC, Micron, and Samsung could be affected, potentially changing the semiconductor industry landscape.

Sticky Note Exposes Ko Wen-je’s “Unaware” Claim
The trial of former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je over the Living Mall City case has entered a critical stage. On August 7, prosecutors presented six handwritten instructions, contradicting his claim of being “unaware and issuing no directives,” showing that on October 26, 2020, he instructed Deputy Mayor Peng Zhen-Sheng on the completion diagram to “speed up administrative processes and finish Living Mall City as soon as possible.”
Deputy Secretary-General Li De-Quan returned the approval form to the mayor’s office on November 5, becoming the only official who refused to comply. Prosecutors stated that the mayor’s office staff handled approvals according to instructions, confirming that Ko was fully aware and issued instructions throughout. The case is still under review.
