Shen Boyang Speaks at German Parliament, Lai Calls for Unified Political Support
DPP legislator Shen Boyang was recently threatened by China with a global arrest, but he said he would not back down. He joined a German parliamentary hearing through a pre-recorded video, where he stressed his commitment to defending freedom of speech.
President Lai Ching-te called on Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu to publicly show support for Shen Boyang. After saying he would protect the rights of legislators, Han responded by asking President Lai to first remove the party’s pro-independence platform and withdraw statements that describe China as a “hostile foreign force.” This led to political disputes and debates between the parties.
Severe Rain Floods 3,000 Homes in Suao! Flood-Diversion Delay Draws Criticism
Suao Township in Yilan County was recently hit by heavy rain from a companion weather system, causing severe flooding in more than 3,200 households. The disaster was compared to the flooding caused by Typhoon Megi 15 years ago. Residents said the main reason was the delay in starting the Suao River flood-diversion project.
The project was originally scheduled to be completed next year, but its total budget has increased to NT$7.5 billion due to engineering changes, rising costs, and land acquisition. Premier Cho Jung-tai said the central government will fast-track the approval of the additional NT$2 billion and include the project in next year’s river improvement plan, so the construction can move forward and prevent future flooding.
G7 Warns of China’s Military Buildup, Reaffirms the Need for Taiwan Strait Peace
The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven met in Niagara, Canada, on November 12. In their statement, they said that keeping peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is very important. They opposed any attempt to change the status quo by using force or pressure, and encouraged constructive dialogue to handle cross-strait issues.
The G7 said it supports Taiwan’s meaningful participation in suitable international organizations. The statement also raised concerns about China’s military expansion and the rapid increase of its nuclear arsenal, calling on Beijing to show its commitment to keeping the region stable. The G7 also restated its strong support for Ukraine and stressed the need to push for an immediate ceasefire.
Digital Shift’s Biggest Blind Spot! 74% of Consumers Trust Brand-Matched Domains
Nearly 90% of small and medium-sized enterprises in Taiwan have taken steps toward digital transformation, but many still overlook the importance of having their own domain name. A report shows that 74% of consumers are more likely to trust a domain name that matches the brand name. Because .tw and .taiwan domains are protected under Taiwanese law, the rate of illegal use or fraud is only 0.07%.
The Taiwan Network Information Center says that businesses relying only on social media platforms may lose control of their website traffic and customer data. Having a dedicated domain name helps companies build a trustworthy official site at a low cost and gives them an advantage in future digital development.
AI Reshapes the Job Market, Junior Engineers Face a Crisis
The U.S. software industry is being strongly affected by the rise of AI, leading to a sharp drop in demand for entry-level software engineers. Many computer science graduates from top universities are sending out hundreds of applications but still find it hard to get interviews. As AI can quickly generate code, companies are choosing AI tools or outsourcing to reduce their costs.
In contrast, AI development in Taiwan is still not mature, and the main challenges are talent moving overseas and a widening skills gap. Many professionals with strong expertise choose to build their careers abroad, and few return. Experts say Taiwan needs to speed up the training of cross-disciplinary talent who can use AI, so they can help companies adopt these tools and support their transformation.
Let’s wrap up today’s episode. We’ve learned about some important events happening around the world.
Shen Boyang’s situation set off a political debate between Lai and Han, centered on party platforms and how to address China-related issues.
After major flooding, the government plans to speed up funding and approval for the long-delayed flood-diversion project.
The G7 highlighted the importance of regional stability by stressing peace in the Taiwan Strait, expressing concerns about China’s military actions, and reaffirming support for Ukraine.
With many Small and Medium-sized Enterprises going digital, having a brand-matching domain is now a key advantage for earning trust and managing customer data.
The rise of AI is reducing demand for entry-level software engineers in the U.S., while Taiwan faces its own challenges due to limited AI development and ongoing talent outflow.
In the next episode, we will together explore the recent hot news with you in the morning. Don’t forget to come back. Have a nice day and hear me next time. Bye.
