Wildfire in South Korea’s Sancheong County Claims 4 Lives, State of Emergency Declared
A wildfire broke out in Sancheong County, South Korea, on the afternoon of March 22, causing the deaths of three firefighters and one public servant. Over 200 residents were forced to evacuate. By the morning of March 23, the fire had burned more than 3,286 hectares of land, equal to 4,600 football fields. The disaster resulted in 4 deaths, 5 serious injuries, and 1 minor injury. Authorities deployed 304 rescue workers and 20 helicopters to fight the fire. A state of emergency was declared in southeastern areas, including Ulsan, North Gyeongsang, and South Gyeongsang. The Korea Forest Service issued the highest fire warning for 12 regions, and some highways were closed for safety reasons.

Ministry of Civil Service Amends Law: Major Misconduct to Result in Immediate Dismissal
The Ministry of Civil Service proposed the draft amendments to the Public Functionaries Merit Evaluation Act on March 23, 2025. The draft adds five major violations that would result in dismissal with two demerits recorded at once. These include workplace bullying, sexual harassment, sexual assault, drunk driving, and drugged driving causing death or injury. The amendment also specifies the punishment period. The proposal has been sent to the Examination Yuan for review and will later be submitted to the Legislative Yuan. This reflects the government’s zero-tolerance stance on serious misconduct.

This has increased travel distance and costs. Waltz noted that recent U.S. airstrikes have severely damaged the Houthis’ leadership and weapon facilities. However, the group continues to target ships in the Red Sea, disrupting global shipping operations.
