(Forbes)(Fielding University)

Welcome to Hot English Topics. With advances in technology, AI is everywhere—from phone assistants to content recommendations, from chatbots to automated workflows. It is changing our daily habits, and these changes are quietly influencing the way we think, behave, and even our personality. Today, let’s explore how AI is shaping our everyday life and personal traits.

In daily life, we encounter AI in more ways than we might imagine. Many AI applications are hidden in our routines, quietly influencing our decisions and behaviors. For example, recommendation systems analyze our preferences to provide personalized content or products, subtly shaping our interests and habits. Additionally, AI can offer emotional support and companionship, especially through voice-enabled chatbots, affecting our social behavior and emotional dependence(MIT Media Lab) While convenient, we still need to maintain self-awareness and avoid complete reliance on AI.

When you shop online or browse social media, AI is filtering information for you. Recommendation systems analyze users’ past behavior to provide personalized products and content. This approach can increase clicks and sales, but it may also narrow users’ choices and reduce diversity (來源). It can result in people only seeing information that aligns with their existing views, creating “filter bubble” or “echo chamber,” which limit exposure to diverse perspectives (來源). In other words, more and more of the content you see is determined by AI, rather than being entirely your own choice.

(MDPI)

As AI technology becomes more widespread, our ways of learning and thinking are quietly changing. According to research from Oxford University Press, over 80% of teenagers use AI tools in their studies. While this increases learning speed, it may also lead to shallower thinking, reducing opportunities for questioning and independent thought. In addition, research from MIT Media Lab shows that students using AI tools like ChatGPT exhibit lower brain activity during the writing process and consistently underperform at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels. These studies reveal a phenomenon called “cognitive offloading,” where we delegate thinking tasks to AI, thereby decreasing opportunities for independent thinking

However, AI also has positive effects. For example, it can provide immediate feedback, help students identify learning blind spots, and offer personalized study recommendations (College of Education). The key is to balance its use and avoid over-reliance. Therefore, we should learn to enjoy the conveniences AI brings while maintaining critical thinking, ensuring that AI serves as a supportive tool in our learning rather than replacing our cognitive abilities.

(ie edu)

(frontiers)

In addition, more and more people are beginning to see AI as a friend, a life coach, or even an emotional partner — a trend that is especially noticeable among teenagers. According to the American Psychological Association, many young people are turning to AI chatbots for emotional support. However, prolonged interaction with AI may lead to emotional dependence and negatively affect real-life relationships(ie edu)

Interacting with AI is not entirely negative. When used properly, it can serve as a helpful tool to improve social skills for certain groups. For example, AI social coaches can assist people with autism in practicing interpersonal communication and enhancing their emotional understanding and expression. (frontiers)

(Song, 2025, BMC Psychology)

In summary, you might start to realize that AI is subtly shaping our personalities. Over reliance on algorithmic content recommendations can gradually narrow our range of interests and reduce the motivation to explore proactively (Zhang, 2024, Educational Technology Journal). Long-term dependence on AI for decision-making may also make us more reliant, impulsive, and even prone to anxiety and withdrawal.

At the same time, the AI era brings positive benefits worth acknowledging. AI can inspire creativity, offer new perspectives, help us better understand ourselves, and even promote more efficient learning and work habits(Song, 2025, BMC Psychology)

(Forbes) (Fielding University)

In short, AI has become deeply integrated into our lives, shaping our thinking, decision-making, learning, social interactions, and even our personality. Rather than resisting it, we should learn to coexist with AI. The key is balance: leveraging AI’s conveniences to boost efficiency and creativity while maintaining critical thinking, independent exploration, and genuine human connections. Only then can we remain autonomous and in control of our lives in the age of technology (Forbes) (Fielding University).
